Origin of Citizenship by Investment

Launched in 2013, the Grenada Citizenship by Investment Program is newer than many of its Caribbean counterparts, but this newness means this program has been able to learn from and refine its approach based on similar programs in the area. The government of Grenada passed the Citizenship by Investment Act with the mission of strengthening the country by creating economic growth through foreign investments. Grenada’s Citizenship by Investment Program is easy to navigate and rich with benefits.

Benefits of Pursuing Grenada Citizenship by Investment

As with many CBI programs, the Grenada Citizenship by Investment Program offers visa-free travel to countries that can be notoriously tricky to secure visas for, as well as provides tax reduction opportunities and international business prospects. However, there is one major benefit to holding a Grenada passport: the eligibility to receive an E-2 visa for the U.S. Below we will highlight these benefits and discuss the details.

Woman holding Passport

Ease of Travel

A Grenada passport comes with visa-free access to 146 countries, making it the 33rd strongest passport in the world. If an applicant is a citizen of a country that has to navigate lottery visa systems, burdensome application processes, and tedious requirements just to go on a trip to a different country, obtaining a Grenada passport can entirely shift that experience.

E-2 Visa

The most prized benefit of a Grenada passport is the access to an E-2 visa for the United States. Most other CBI programs grant a visa that allows travel to the U.S., but with an E-2 visa, it is possible to work and even live in the U.S. Since the U.S. is one of the most difficult countries to move to, this visa can open up doors that otherwise would be nonexistent. To be able to exercise this visa, applicants are required to open or buy a business in the United States with a minimum investment of $100,000.

Tax benefits

Tax Reduction

Citizens of Grenada are free from paying taxes on global income, dividends, interest, or royalties from another country. Inheritance tax, capital gains tax, income tax, and even stamp duty are all nonexistent for holders of a Grenada passport. If taxes in multiple categories can be reduced enough, many participants in the Grenada Citizenship by Investment Program will see a return on their initial investment over time.

Business Opportunities

Business Expansion

If an international company is registered in Grenada, which requires the owner to hold a Grenada passport, that business will experience a reduction in taxes and not be subject to currency control restrictions when conducting international business. Currency and taxes are two of the most complex cost types of international business, but Grenada is diligent about reducing that burden, allowing businesses to prosper.

Whether an applicant is a busy entrepreneur or is simply seeking to provide their family with more opportunities around the world, Grenada’s Citizenship by Investment Program can be a great way to achieve those goals. With so many benefits, it is easy to assume that the application process is long and tedious, but that could not be further from the truth. With a few simple steps and a number of months, these benefits can become reality.

Grenada Passport Background

Why Grenada?

With a population of just 110,000, the small nation of Grenada is less weathered by tourism and outside influence. Life on the island is simple, slow, and colorful. But just because tourism rates are lower there does not mean it is not packed with beautiful beaches, jaw-dropping snorkeling, and fresh produce that will make mouths water. Where the neighboring islands come with a large price tag, Grenada remains fairly affordable.

Investment Options and Associated Fees

Main applicants to the Grenada Citizenship by Investment Program must be over 18 years old, have no criminal record, and be in good health standing. Beyond that, securing a Grenada passport will require an investment in the form of real estate or a contribution to the state fund. Both of these options allow investors to include their spouse, children, dependent parents, and even siblings on their application.

1 OPTION

Contribution
to the National Transformation Fund

$150 000+

It is worth noting that this investment type requires a non-refundable contribution to the National Transformation Fund of at least $150,000 for a single investor. A spouse and two children can be included on the application for $200,000. For each additional dependent child, an additional contribution of $25,000 per person is expected. For dependent parents under 55 years old, applicants should set aside $50,000 per person and for siblings, an additional $75,000 per person is required.

Due diligence fees are charged by the Grenadian government and are a flat $5,000 per person aged 17 or older. These fees are required in order to process the application and review each individual’s information. One amazing aspect of this investment opportunity is that the money invested goes back to the citizens of Grenada, helping to invest in the island’s future.

2 OPTION

Real Estate Purchase

$220 000+

If applicants are seeking more of a return on investment, they can purchase shares in approved real estate projects to obtain a Grenada passport. For an individual applicant, an investment of $220,000 is required and that amount stays the same no matter how many family members are included on the application. However, there is a government fee of $50,000 that is flat for a family of 4. For each additional child or dependent over 55 years old, $25,000 is added. Parental dependents under 55 will need to pay $50,000 per person and an applicant’s siblings can expect a fee of $75,000 per person.

Lastly, there are due diligence fees that are $5,000 per person aged 17 or older, which is the same rate as with a contribution to the nation’s Transformation Fund. The biggest difference with a real estate investment is that after 5 years, the property investment can be sold for profit, recouping much of the initial investment if desired.

The Other Side of an Investment

In an attempt to transform its economy to be more independent and financially stable, Grenada started the National Transformation Fund in 2013, at the same time as the Grenada Citizenship by Investment Program began. This fund directs monetary investments to critical components of Grenada’s economy such as tourism, energy, and alternative agriculture. For an island nation that faces setbacks including hurricane destruction, funds such as this one are important to the nation’s future.

Working with a Competent Agent

Competent agents are well-equipped to move the process along swiftly and smoothly, making the process more manageable for Grenada’s government and the applicant themselves. Our team at Global Residence Index can guide each applicant from start to finish, ensuring all documents are correct and requirements are met the first time around.

Authorized Licensed agent

Application Procedure

The application process can be done without a visit to Grenada. However, it is important that things get done correctly to avoid any delays in the approval. When an applicant begins working with our team, we will first conduct a review to eliminate or resolve potential issues before the process starts. Once that is complete, the following steps will take place:

Document Collection & Review

When it is time to pull together the legal and financial documents required for the Grenada Citizenship by Investment Program, our team will help each applicant ensure that everything is in order. A few of the required documents are a birth certificate, certificate of no criminal record, and new passport photos.

Due Diligence

The gathered documents will then be sent to Grenada for review. The team that processes CIB applications will conduct a due diligence assessment, which usually takes 3-6 months to complete. If any questions or issues arise during this portion, the government will work directly with the agent, not the applicant themselves.

Approval & Investment

If approved, the applicant will be granted 30 days to fulfill their investment requirement by either purchasing real estate or submitting a contribution to the National Transformation Fund.

Passport Granted

At this point, passports should be sent to each individual in the application just 4 weeks after the investment is complete. Now, applicants and their families can consider themselves citizens of Grenada.
